A room with hard floors, bare walls and a lot of glass can sound busy even when only a few people are talking. Acoustic panels absorb some of the sound that would otherwise bounce around the space, helping to reduce reverberation.

Start with the room's use. A meeting room needs clear speech; a music room may need a different balance of absorption and reflection. Panel thickness, placement and the amount of surface covered all deserve attention before colour and finish.

Manufacturers commonly publish a noise reduction coefficient, or NRC, to describe a product's sound absorption. Compare tested products and their installation details. A high rating on a sample does not tell you exactly how an entire room will sound.

For a larger fit-out, an acoustic assessment can help identify where treatment will do the most useful work.
